Picky Eater
One of the hardest things I face with Zadey is food. She’s incredibly picky about what she’s going to eat, how often she’s going to eat, and if what she’s going to eat is going to be good for her. I feel frustrated constantly that what she’ll take from me is not always good.
There’s much more to food than chicken nuggets and gold fish. Yet I’ll be damned if I can get her to actually go for anything different.
Often I try many different tactics to get her to try something new. No snacks unless you have your meal, if she won’t eat her dinner when I give it to her she doesn’t get a snack but dinner served to her again.
But it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up this game but raising a picky eater is not what I want to do.
There’s one thing though, just one thing that I never have to fight with her about.
From time to time Joanne and enjoy going to eat at TGIFriday’s. The food is great, there’s always plenty of stuff to look around at, and it feels down home and relaxing. But never do we actually order a kid’s meal for Zadey.
Instead, she gets an appetizer that she can nearly eat all to herself and this is where it’s so surprising. She loves the artichoke and spinach dip. No chips, no bread, just give her the dip and a spoon and she’s digging in.
She’ll eat nearly the entire bowl of it. She’ll ask for more. She won’t hesitate to eat the huge chunks of artichoke from the bowl. She loves the stuff! So today, after eating at Friday’s I’m going to hunt down this recipe! Somehow I’ve got to find a way to make this at home where I know it’ll be healthier for her and I can slowly start to work other veggies into the dip.
It’s crazy and much unexpected for her to love something such as this.
At this point, this love isn’t enough. But it’s a healthier choice than other things she’d like to have. And it also gives me something to expand on with the tastes that I know she likes to have.
For me, it’s also motivation to spend more time cooking and preparing meals that I may have a better chance of feeding her. Sure, I’ve already got a variety but eventually I’ve got to hit the nail on the head with food she really likes.
This just might be the beginning of that.
The picture is from today, she’s digging in and loving it.

Both of my kids are extremely picky eaters as well. It definitely amazes me what things they will eat though.
Ethan’s obsession is stuffed tortellini. I get the premade stuff, and he goes to town on it.
Madi’s obsession is chocolate-vanilla Rice Krispies, XD. She’d eat those all day if she could.
